Due to Africa’s book famine, many classrooms are suffering from a lack of educational books and materials which is denying students their right to quality education and forcing families to continue living in poverty. Over 46 million children have never set foot in a classroom and in many classrooms, textbooks are shared between 10-20 students. There is an urgency to provide educational books and materials to these classrooms and to provide students with the opportunity to take control of their own life. Books for Africa distributes millions of books to rural school libraries, orphanages, adult literacy programs and community resource centers to allow African children to learn the skills necessary to provide for themselves and others.
Africa has been plagued by wars, economic crises, poverty, malnutrition and illiteracy but by supplying educational books and supplies to under-resourced classrooms, everything can change. Education gives young people the opportunity to end the cycle of poverty, attain a better quality of life and transform their country in a positive way.
Your impact donation is helping to achieve the below Sustainable Development Goals developed by the United Nations.
Education is the great equalizer in the world and books are at the foundation of a strong educational system. Access to an education is one of the only opportunities young people have to end the cycle of poverty and attain a better quality of life than previous generations. We have shipped over 47 million books to 55 different countries on the African continent. In 2019, we also shipped 155 computers and e-readers containing more than 400,000 digital books to 29 African countries. Our books now occupy once-empty shelves and are held in the hands of children who have never held a book before.
