Mangroves around the world are quickly disappearing due to the threats from coastal development, agriculture, aquacultural expansion, deforestation and climate change. They have been identified to be one of the most threatened habitats on Earth. Mexico has one the highest deforestation rates in the world, as thousands of hectares of mangroves are destroyed and replaced with shrimp farms, agro-industrial plantations and tourism developments every year. If these practices continue, 50% of Mexico’s mangroves will disappear within 25 years. WildCoast protects mangrove forests in the Gulf of California, Bahia Magdalena, and Oaxaca through federal zone concessions, blue carbon credits, monitoring and outreach and has sequestered over 26.7 million tons of carbon dioxide through their mangrove conservation efforts.
Mangroves are incredibly important for the environment as they are one of the world’s greatest carbon sequestering ecosystems. They are actively fighting climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it in their rich soils. Mangroves can sequester four times more carbon dioxide than rainforests. They are home to various animals like gray whales, sea turtles, migratory birds and fish while also acting as a natural buffer against storm surge, coastal flooding and wave erosion.
