HIV attacks the cells in the immune system, destroying our body’s natural defence against illness. Antiretroviral therapy can save lives as it stops the HIV virus from attacking the cells of the immune system. An early diagnosis means the patient can start the antiretroviral treatments early which allows the immune system to maintain its strength to fight off infections and diseases. As many HIV positive children lack child antiretroviral treatment and risk death by taking adult HIV medication, the American Foundation for Children with AIDS sources the child medication and delivers it free of charge to various clinics and hospitals in the most underserved and marginalised communities in Uganda, Kenya, Democratic Republic of Congo and Zimbabwe to support their HIV positive children. However, as more HIV positive children survived, more children died from starvation when the community suffered from a famine or a drought. American Foundation for Children with Aids started to provide nutritional support in the form of agricultural training, greenhouses, livestock and garden projects and seed and livestock distributions. Through using manure and packets of drought-resistant seeds, families are able feed themselves and their livestock.

Importance Importance

Communities and families are struggling to support their HIV positive children due to global antiretroviral treatment distribution efforts which are saving the lives of both children and adults. Providing seed packets allows families to be self-sufficient, by growing their own vegetables and feeding their chickens and goats to collect eggs and milk. Proper nutrition for HIV positive people is incredibly important to increase the strength of the immune system, help manage HIV symptoms and the medication’s side effects.
