Ask a question

While global polio cases have reduced by 99.9% since 1988, Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan still have cases of polio and are currently undergoing immunisation programmes. The poliovirus, which can spread easily from person to person, can cause paralysis, breathing problems, meningitis and death. While the severe paralytic polio symptoms occur in only 1% of polio cases, post-polio syndrome, a progressive disease that develops around 35 years after the initial infection, affects up to 64% of all polio patients. They suffer from muscle and joint pain, breathing and swallowing problems, apnea, memory difficulties and exhaustion, among others. It is End Polio Now’s mission to eradicate polio and create a polio-free world, where children won’t die or suffer from the crippling effects of a vaccine-preventable virus.

Importance Importance

The eradication of polio improves global public health, child health and saves the global economy billions of dollars every year. Since 1998, polio immunisation programmes have prevented 17 million paralysis cases and 850,000 deaths worldwide. If polio is not eradicated within 10 years, the world could experience a resurgence with 200,000 new paralysis cases in children annually. Polio eradication and immunisation efforts are the answer.
