Currently there are around 70 million homeless cats and dogs in the US, with only six to eight million entering shelters annually and another 1.5 million are being euthanised in shelters due to overpopulation and lack of adopters. Operating in Northern Virginia and the Washington Metropolitan area, A Forever Home Rescue Foundation rescues, treats and rehomes abandoned and neglected puppies and dogs. Equipment is vital to maintain the operation of these no-kill volunteer-based shelters and the health and wellbeing of its animal guests. Many shelters suffer from equipment shortages such as food, toys, leashes and medical supplies. With many abandoned and neglected dogs suffering from ticks, flea bites and more, medical supplies in animal shelters are imperative for their recovery.

Importance Importance

Treatment and preventative medication against ticks, fleas, lice, sandflies and mites are crucial to maintain the dog’s health. Left untreated, these pests can cause serious skin infections, tapeworm infections, lyme disease and other life-threatening tick-borne, blood-borne and/or parasitic diseases. A dose of the preventative medication has to be given every month to ensure the dogs are effectively protected. If an untreated dog is adopted, it poses serious health risks to humans as these pests can quickly jump from host to host.

Facts & Stats Facts & Stats
  • For every homeless person in the US, there are around 5 homeless animals
  • A demand for breeder-bred dogs instead of rescues fuels puppy mill operations, a large-scale commercial dog breeding program where profit comes before the wellbeing of the puppies. They are held in small, dirty and overcrowded cages without adequate veterinary care, food and water
  • 4,500 shelter animals are euthanised every day in the US
  • A female flea can lay 20 eggs a day. If 50% of those eggs are female, it can produce around 20,000 new fleas in 60 days
  • As ticks are arachnids, they are more closely related to scorpions and spiders than insects

A Forever Home Rescue Foundation

We are a foster home rescue that has rescued and placed over 17,000 dogs and puppies in their forever homes. We have also helped several rural shelters, transported thousands of homeless pets to safety, provided assistance during major disasters like Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy, helped reform shelters and assisted in shutting down puppy mills and hoarding situations. We take pride in ensuring that each of our dogs receives the necessary medical care and finds their loving forever home.
